Chapter Ten
Iâd just turned on my car in front of the university, when Shannon called. âHeâs getting out on bail.â The relief in her voice put a smile on my face.
âI know one coffee house owner who is extremely happy right now.â
âGirl, you have no idea.â
I did. I was equally excited. Trials took a long time to put together and that gave us a better chance of finding the real killer before they sent Michael away.
âWas it the lawyer who finally convinced him?â
She laughed. âNo. That would be me. I decided enough was enough. I went down there and told him what your brother said to me earlier this morning. That he was going to county and it was not a nice place. That he was being selfish making me worry all the time.
âThat I cry myself to sleep. And if things didnât get fixed, well, either way, we need to spend as much time together as possible. Then I cried. Like big blubbery tears. He canât take a woman crying, especially me. I wasnât faking it. Though, I would have done that a long time ago if Iâd known how fast it worked on him.â
I snorted and then coughed a little. It was a good thing I wasnât on the road yet. âIâd like to come see you guysânot tonight. You need some alone time, but maybe tomorrow.â
âOh, thatâs why I called. Iâm throwing a little welcome home party for him tonight at my place. Just some sweets, snacks and wine. Nothing too fancy. Jake and Kane are coming. For the record, I invited Greg, but heâs working another case tonight.â
My brother had been busier than ever lately. They usually sat around the station most days playing solitaire or poker on their computers, but heâd been out in the field almost every day since the murder. The fall festival security was a big deal, but I wondered if there might be something else going on. I needed to ask him about that.
âWhat time and what do you want me to bring?â
âAround seven, and Iâve got everything covered. Oh, and George Clooney is invited as well. Michael was asking about him.â
âHeâll be okay at home for a little while.â Well, last time Iâd left him heâd eaten all the sofa cushions. Nothing like some separation anxiety with a ginormous dog.
George grunted from the back seat, as if to say, âNo. I wonât. I might eat a sofa if you arenât there to hang out with me.â
Weird since most of the day and night he slept. But when he was alone, he was so anxious. And given what had happened over the last week, it probably wasnât a good idea. He might eat the door if something was going on outside.
âNo. Really. He loves Mr. Snuffles, even if that love isnât returned. If heâs here, I donât have to worry about Snuffs coming out of the bedroom and walking all over the food. I swear that cat is Houdini. Iâll be glad when Michael and I are married, and I can let him outside at the winery.
